In the past few decades, tourism industry has experienced a continuous Growth and this industry becomes the one of the fastest growing economic sectors globally. Travel and Tourism become one of the most important sector in the World economy, accounting of 10% of World's GDP and 320 million jobs Worldwide. This industry is also a key factor for all socio- economic progress, with tourism industry several developments made in  both national and international travel.

Globally, Tourism industry contributed almost $9 billion dollars to Global GDP in 2019. 

The Global Pandemic, has put more than 100 million jobs at risk many in micro, small and medium sized enterprises that includes a high share of Women, who represents 55% of tourism workforce, according to United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

However this growth has been halted in 2020 dur to Covid-19 outbreak. With this, all airplanes are on ground, trains halted at its place, hotels and resorts were closed, and whole Travel and Tourism industry gets most affected sector since the virus starts. This pandemic has cut both national and international travel in the first quarter of 2020.


Closing Borders, Travel Ban and Decline of International Tourists

The Covid-19 Spread all round the World. Countries all over the World the World applied Travel ban or Travel restrictions due to coronavirus spread. Travel halted, Airports closures, train closures etc. and nationwide lockdown just on to control coronavirus spread.

After the spread of coronavirus, almost 94% of countries having coronavirus travel restrictions. 

The number of international tourists are remarkably grow throughout the years, in 2017 arrivals total reach 1.3 billion globally, in 2018 its 1.4 billion, and in 2019 its 1.5 billion. But in 2020, with sever impact of Covid19 it gets declined by 22% and then 65% in half 2020.

These all closing borders, Travel ban and decline of international and national tourists only be happened because of coronavirus outbreak.


Massive Impact of Covid-19 on Tourism

Firstly, Tourism is the most affected Sector by the Covi-19 pandemic, impacting livelihoods, economies, public sectors in all Continents.

1.) About 100-120 Million Direct Tourism Jobs are at risk due to this Pandemic. 

2.) Export Revenue from Tourism fall by $910 billion to $1.2 trillion in 2020, which is affecting Global GDP by almost 2.5%.

3.) Hotel industry witnessed a severe impact of Covid-19 pandemic and Lockdown. According to reports there is sharp decline in performance indices:

      -55.9% decline in occupancy

      - 74.4% decline in revenue per bed available

4.) Women who make about 54% of tourism workforce and youth generation globally are at risk categories.

5.) There is no Nation which will be unaffected due to Coronavirus.

6.) The sudden fall in tourism sector also cuts off the funding of biodiversity conservation.

7.) Globally 90% of Museums closed and 13% of them never open.

8.) Many International Airline companies become bankrupt.


Priorities for Balancing Tourism Sector and Restart

Enabling Tourism once again is a major task and requires measures ensuring that people are safe and feel safe while travelling globally. There are priority areas to transform tourism:- 

1.) Boost competitiveness and build economic diversification.

2.) Advance innovation and digital transformation is needed in tourism sector.

3.) Coordination and partnerships of Government are needed to restart.

With the lockdown ends around the World, many countries have started to ease border restrictions reopen their countries for international tourists. Like in India, firstly Himachal and Uttarakhand have open their borders for tourists but with some covid-19 measures. Traveler who wish to go abroad, now they can visit as countries are welcoming them back. Countries like Beijing, Moscow, Cairo, Nairobi, Jakarta and other East European countries have resumed their tourism. 

As tourism restarts and countries gradually lift their restrictions in many parts of the World, but health remains the most concerned and priority matter to protect workers, countries, communities and travelers.

Only through collective action, coordination and help, we will be able to transform and restart tourism sector, and creates wealth, health and many decent job opportunities for those who lost their jobs in the Covid-19 Pandemic. We can Grow Together.
